Happy first day of fall! In typical California fashion, September 22nd boasts blue skies and 80 degree temps. Nothing new here. However, you can still find ways to embrace the season even if you’re not ready to jump straight to chunky knits and OTK boots. I did some shopping at Urban Outfitters recently with fall transitional pieces in mind. If you want to see exactly what I picked up, head to my YouTube channel to see the haul video!

Here are some of the ways I handle the summer to fall transition. These tips allow me to put my best basic betch foot forward, and also squeeze extra longevity out of my summer wardrobe.

Color Palette

The easiest way to participate the fall spirit without sweating profusely (not even in the name of fashion am I willing to stoop that low) is to embrace a fall color palette. Burnt orange, camel, nude, olive, and bordeaux all scream fall and are easy to incorporate in a variety of pieces.

My favorite way to rock rich wine tones for fall is to reach into my makeup bag. I die for a bold berry lip. I play out the corals, pinks, and barely there nudes all summer long, so by the time September rolls around they have no place on my face!

Layers

Another great way to dip your toe in the fall pond is layer up the lightweight pieces. Earlier this week, I wore a black midi dress, a sheer grey cardigan, and black booties to work and a coworker stopped me in the hall and said, “You look so fall today!” I looked down at my open toed booties and bare legs and just laughed. I was freezing my butt off in the frigid office air but hey, at least I looked the part!

Footwear

Booties, ankle boots, block heel boots, over the knee boots, stiletto boots, suede boots, flat boots, cowboy boots (I could go on but you get the point) boots = fall! They are so easy to throw on with shorts or a summer dress, and take the look right on through October. Boots add a little edge, which I usually welcome after three months of being a bohemian beach babe…but perhaps that’s just me?

Accessories

When it’s time to hang up my woven Panama hat and beach bag, my go-to fall accessories are felt fedoras, patterned scarves, and structured handbags. We shot these images back in August so I wasn’t committed to my fall mission yet. I easily could’ve swapped out my bag and wedges, and thrown on a cardigan to take this look straight to the apple orchard. 😉

What are some pieces you look forward to dusting off come September 22nd? Let me know!
